What do we call the Minister?
The Informal Answer
At Saint James, the clergy names are Graham, Val , and Jack. These are their
Christian names. They like to be called by these names (makes sense).
The Formal Answer
The Rector (an Anglican cleric, or priest, male or female, who is in charge of a parish) can be referred to as Rector, Father/Mother or Reverend. If the Minister is an Archdeacon, He or she may be called Archdeacon. When in doubt, observe how other people refer to the Minister or ask him or her directly.

Who can take Communion?
Anyone baptised in
any Christian denomination is welcome to take Communion. If you are interested in becoming baptised, please speak to the Rector. If you are not baptised, you are still welcome to come up at communion for a blessing. When you kneel at the rail, simply cross your arms over your chest so that your hands are on your shoulders.

How old do you have to be to take communion?

Many years ago, it was traditional to wait until you were confirmed to receive communion. The modern prerequisite for communion is Christian baptism. It really is up to the parents as to when to have their children receive Communion. Saint James offers a program called
Life in the Eucharist which gives children an understanding of what Communion is all about. If you are interested in this for your children, please speak with the Director of Family Ministry.
All children are encouraged to come to the communion rail. If you don't wish for your child to receive communion, instruct them to cross their hands over their chest or look at the person administering communion when they get to your child and shake your head
no-wise. They will receive a blessing from the Priest.

I am not comfortable with the common cup. What are the alternatives?
Many people are not comfortable drinking wine from the common cup and, even though there has never been a case of a person
contracting a contageous disease from a Communion cup, many of our worshippers once used the
intinction method; dipping the tip of the wafer in the wine. This practice is NO LONGER ALLOWED as it has been shown that there is greater risk of infection through this method. As an alternative, you may elect to recieve communion in one kind only. as is the practice in many Christian denominations. After you consume the wafer, cross your hands over your chest and the priest will understand that you don't wish to partake of the wine.

Why is there a red prayer book and a green one?
The smaller red book is the traditional Book of Common Prayer and is commonly used at the 8:30 service, which is a more formal, traditional Anglican service. The green book, Book of Alternative Services (BAS) is a more modern collection of services and is used at the 10:30 worship.

What is a Warden?
Churchwardens are the lay leaders of the church. At Saint James, we have four wardens each serving a four year term. They are elected by the vestry (congregation). They are the legal signing officers for the Church and general administration team and legally responsible for the financial organization and general operations of the Church; working with the Rector, staff and parish council.
