Mission in Peru
Don and Marion Rake worked in Lima, Peru with Sleeping Children Around the World (SCAW) for 3 years, until 2001 when SCAW decided not to return to Peru. The Rakes realized the need for help was so great in the Shanty Towns, that they decided to contact the Cathedral in Peru regarding a return trip on their own.

In 2004, Don & Marion took hygiene, sewing and school supplies plus a small amount of money to the Anglican Diocese of Peru - all were well received. The following year, plus every year since, their two daughters, Debbie Duplan and Eleanor Kelly, have accompanied them. Since the initial trip, both supplies and donations have continued to increase. In 2007, 420 lbs. of supplies plus over $10,000.00 was taken.
Lima, the capital of Peru, has a population of approximately 8 million people, 57% of these people make $1.00 U.S. or less a day. Like Toronto, Lima is made up of smaller cities within the greater Lima area. The poorer families live in the outlying areas of the cities, on the foothills of the Andes Mountains. These areas are referred to as Shanty Towns. New homes are constructed of cardboard, tin or reed walls on the dirt floor, having no running water, toilets or electricity. When money has been saved, the homes are upgraded to wood and finally brick after many years. The initial homes are very primitive to our standards. Lima has a very high crime rate so one must be careful when travelling by foot or car.
Our efforts go to 6 mission parishes and 4 schools - one being in Arequipa which is located approximately 150 miles south of Lima.
